Heat Pumps Installation?
Overview
These are designed for small dwellings and extract air via duct work connected to the warm areas of the building such as bathrooms, kitchens and utility rooms.
The air is taken from the warmer areas of the building and transferred onto the heat pump's refrigerated circuit, which allows it to heat either water or the building it's self. This system is ideal for flats and social housing.
Ventilation, which means totally hygienic inside air, is a basic requirement for living in a healthy house. Controlled domestic ventilation with heat recovery reuses the energy from the exhaust air. Not only that, the additional heat generated internally from lighting, people and domestic appliances is also utilised through heat recovery
Fresh outside air is supplied to the house through cleanable outside vent holes. The air overflow occurs under the door or through the overflow vent holes. The warm inside air (exhaust air) is drawn into the ventilation system. Warm exhaust air is supplied to the heat pump for heat recovery. When the inside air has passed through the heat pump the discharge air is released into the open air. Before this, the heat pump has extracted sufficient energy from the exhaust air to produce hot water.
Am I eligible?
Duct work is required to transfer exhaust air from warm rooms of the house to the water source for heating. For this reason it can be uneconomical to retro fit this product and is usually more suited to new build or renovation projects. The ducting should be designed in at planning stage to ensure the system is incorporated efficiently and effectively.

Funding and Grants
Currently the Renewable Heat Incentive does not include Exhaust Air heat pumps. It is expected though that phase 2 of the RHI may include this form of technology.
Phase 2 (available from October 2012) - RENEWABLE HEAT INCENTIVE
People in receipt of the Renewable Heat Premium Payments will be able to receive long term RHI tariff support once these tariffs are introduced, as will anybody who has installed an eligible technology since 15th July 2009.
These tariff payments will start alongside the Green Deal from October 2012 to allow a more whole-house approach to heat production and energy saving.
RHI is designed to provide financial support that encourages individuals, communities and businesses to switch from using fossil fuel for heating, to renewables such as wood fuel.
