Overview
When considering environmental issues, door specifications may not immediately be high on the agenda. However, the specifications of traditional designs increasingly, do not satisfy the requirements for more stringent performance or a preference for the use of sustainably sourced materials.
Generally 15% of heat loss occurs through the external doors of a house. A basic 44mm thick timber panelled door, of a traditional design will have a U-value of around 3.0W/m2K. This product is suitable for repair work or in replacements. However, improved efficiency can be made by changing from solid timber doors to doors with thermal foam in-fill and/ or adding Low E glazing units.
Internal Doors
Whilst internal doors make little contribution to energy efficiency, they can contribute environmentally. Products are now available which carry full chain of custody or general environmental certification.
Benefits
- A wide range of sustainable and thermally efficient internal and external doors are available to suit every home and every budget.
- Quality external doors increase the security of the property and reduce heat loss.
- Choosing the correct doors will reduce utility bills by containing heat within the property. 15% of household heat is lost through external doors, therefore choosing a product with good U-values can pay for it's self over time.
