Overview

For many years a trench has been filled with unsustainable wet concrete. Today we have other options for constructing foundations; options which perform better thermally, are produced from recycled materials and are less harmful to the environment. Foundation blocks offer excellent thermal performance and save time and money.

Foundation blocks are made from aircrete (also known as Autoclaved Aerated Concrete, AAC). Aircrete is one of the lightest forms of concrete, yet it is fully load-bearing with a range of block strengths available up to 8.7N/mm2.

Below ground level, aircrete blocks are resistant to sulphate attack and frost damage, which means they can be used where other masonry types are unsuitable. They also have third party certification for use below the damp proof course (DPC) level in foundations. Aircrete blocks are fully certified for use in both the outer and inner leaf of cavity constructions, as well as solid foundations in sulphate bearing soils and groundwater Classes DS-1, 2, 3 and 4. This means that aircrete can be used in ground conditions which could be permanently saturated.

Benefits

  • constructing a foundation with aircrete foundation blocks is up to 24% cheaper than cavity aggregate block foundations.
  • Reduce ground floor heat loss by up to 25%, therefore reducing the need for additional floor insulation.
  • Aircrete blocks provide sound insulation performance that is equivalent to much heavier blocks of the same thickness and are fully compliant for use under the Robust Details scheme.
  • One aircrete foundation block replaces two 100mm concrete blocks, which means that the laying rate is twice as fast.

Course Overview

Domestic Developers Compliance Course gives an overview of legislative compliance and product related scope, detailing how Part L 2010 integrates with SAP 2009, ACDs (Accredited Construction Details) and details on the Code for Sustainable Homes and how this can be achieved. Also, the implications of pressure testing within SAP is covered including a practical demonstration.

The course is aimed at general builders, sub contractors, architects, surveyors, local council employees and other individuals wishing to gain understanding of compliance.

Installer Tips

  • Trenches can be backfilled as soon as installation is complete.
  • These blocks have impressive load-bearing capabilities, and are also exceptionally resistant to freeze/thaw conditions.
  • Aircrete blocks are the only material that can be used with the thin jointing method.
  • Adds points in the Code for Sustainable Homes. The categories of which Block Foundationssit include; Energy and Co2 emissions and Materials. These categories are worth more than 43% of the overall score awarded.
