Overview
Using the correct type of insulation is critical in reducing energy consumption and providing the additional benefits of acoustic control and fire protection.
Types of insulation include:
- Isover Glass wool insulation is manufactured from up to 86% recycled glass that would otherwise go to landfill. This, combined with the use of less materials, less energy and less emissions during manufacture lead to onr of most environmentally sustainable insulation products on the market today.
- Recticel Polyisocyanuarate (PIR) insulation materials benefit the environment as they help to reduce energy consumption, which contributes to lowering carbon dioxide emissions and reducing global warming. Recticel's products are designed and manufactured to result in the lowest environmental impact. PIR insulation achieves an A rating under the BRE Green Guide.
- Rockwool - rock mineral wool insulation is made primarily from volcanic rock, an abundant natural resource. It's used in a wide range of applications and has the advantage of higher levels of acoustic insulation and fire protection properties in addition to being an effective thermal insulator. Widely used in the UK, many rock mineral wool insulation products achieve A+ or A ratings in the Green Guide to Specification. As with glass mineral wool the key benefit is its ability to conserve more energy and reduce emissions over the life of the product than is emitted during its manufacture - typically in excess of 100 times more CO2, SO2 and NO2.
- Black Mountain sheep wool insulation provides a high performance and truly sustainable solution to both consumption of energy and the effects of climate change. Condensation is one of the building industry's biggest challenges; wool absorbs and buffers moisture - hence provides a safeguard against condensation. The BRE Green Guide rates this product as A, as not all sheep's wool insulation is produced in the UK. New Zealand and imported insulation does carry the negative effects of environmental transportation impacts.
- Black Wool natural hemp insulation is a unique blend of natural materials including flax and can be used in conjunction with sheep's wool insulation or as an alternative to less effective insulation material. It's perfect for timber framed walls with its rigid structure preventing slumping and is ideal for period property renovations
Benefits
- Correctly insulated properties greatly reduce the heat loss and acoustics from homes, therefore reducing the amount of energy required for heating.
- Reduces the amount of Co2 generated as the need for externally produced heating into the home is reduced
- In order to be entitled to receive benefits from the renewable heat incentive (RHI) from the use of technologies including; solar thermal, heat pumps and biomass boilers, homes must be suitably insulated in order to qualify for the RHI premium payments and RHI Tariffs.
