Overview
When Choosing windows the two main considerations are normally performance and security. Window performance is usually measured by counting the U-value and energy rating.
U value measures the rate of heat transfer and the value stated is for the whole window. High specification glass units with surface coatings, together with air or inert gas filled double or triple glazing, will produce lower value U-values.
Energy rating measures the windows solar gain and air leakage. Ratings are classified in bands from A (being the best) to G.
In Windows the majority of heat loss occurs through the glass, so high performance glazed units are ultimately the preferred sustainable option. Heat loss also occurs around the window. Accurately measured and well fitted windows will greatly improve performance.

Trade Tips
- Cavity Closer systems are recommended during installation, as accurate window apertures ensure the window has an engineered fit to maximise efficiency. This will add Sustainable Homes code points.
- The Code for Sustainable Homes states that security performance of windows gathers point in The Code for Sustainable Homes. Ensuring products are to police preferred specification will add more weight to the project proposal.
- A factory, pre-painted finish to windows lasts longer and avoids work on site
